2 Fairytale towns to visit in Alsace – France at Christmas

1-Strasbourg

Unlike the other small towns of Alsace, Strasbourg has a more city vibe. It is the official seat of the European Union. Although it is a larger city, it retains its authenticity with a picturesque old town and its magnificent Cathedral. One of the best things to do is to stroll around the city center with the half-timbered buildings and canals. They create a unique setting, especially at Christmas. Strasbourg is considered the capital of Christmas. It has one of the most charming Christmas markets we have ever been to, at least in Europe. Wooden Christmas cabins, tiny lights, Christmas ornaments, and beautifully decorated building facades make Strasbourg a special Christmas destination. If you want to avoid the crowds, we highly recommend visiting in early December. If you want to find a more affordable accommodation, we advise you to choose Strasbourg as your base.

2-Colmar

Colmar is located in the heart of the Alsace region, only one hour away from Strasbourg. It is known as a fairytale Christmas town. Its architectural beauty and festive atmosphere left us in awe. Even with the cold weather, it was a real pleasure to walk through its medieval old town, with the narrow alleys and colorful houses. Colmar also has many romantic spots. So, it is the perfect Christmas getaway not only for families, but also for couples! What could be better than wandering around its little alleyways while enjoying the Christmas façades of the building? If you are looking for the most photogenic places in France at Christmas, Colmar should be at the top of your list. It has some of the most Instagrammable places in Alsace and France as well.

Final Thoughts

In case you have limited time, but still want to visit these two charming towns, we cannot recommend them enough. If you are looking for a place with many museums, cafés, restaurants, and stores, Strasbourg is the best choice for you. Conversely, if you want to explore a walkable medieval town and expect a more relaxing time, Colmar should be your choice. However, both Colmar and Strasbourg are unique French destinations, especially during Christmas.
