Since its architecture and natural beauty are on another level, it is considered the pearl of the French Riviera. However, even though it is a lesser-known place compared to other popular cities in the area, it is overcrowded during the peak summer season. Another special feature of Menton is its delicious cuisine. What could be better than the combination of French and Italian cuisine? Menton also offers stunning mountain views of the Alps, which will probably be snow-capped during the winter. 

How to get to Menton?

You can easily get to Menton from any towns of the French Riviera. Antibes, Cannes, Nice, and Monaco are very close to Menton. However, you can alternatively reach it from Italy. That is why it has a unique geographical location that makes it an easily accessible destination to add to your itinerary. We suggest visiting it as a day trip and spending a whole day exploring this jewel of the Côte d’Azur. If you can spare some extra time, we highly recommend that you stay overnight to fully experience its rare beauty.

1-Stroll around the colorful old town

Strolling through the streets of the old town is one of the most fun things to do in Menton. We had a great time exploring the narrow alleyways, full of life and Italian vibes. Charming squares, palm trees, colorful buildings, cozy cafés, and restaurants create the perfect summer setting. It is undoubtedly one of the best old towns in France. In case you are planning to visit it in summer, the streets get very crowded after 9 am. So, if you want to have this colorful gem all to yourself, you should get there as early as possible. This way, you will avoid the hot summer mornings and afternoons.

2-Visit Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange

At the top of the old town, you will find the magnificent Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange, which is the landmark of Menton. This baroque cathedral dates back to the 17th century and is equally beautiful inside and out. The entrance is free. In addition to its beauty, it is also the tallest building in town. So, it is the perfect place for stunning panoramic views.

3-Enjoy the photogenic Plage des Sablettes

This small beach has gained a lot of attention due to social media. It is one of the most beautiful beaches you will find on the French Riviera. The clear blue waters, white sand, and colorful scenery of the town make it a dream beach to enjoy your morning dip! Imagine swimming against this epic view. The principality of Monaco is an independent state and one of the most luxurious places in the world. A few kilometres from Menton, it is the perfect summer destination. However, if you are not into fancy places, Monaco is not all about that. It also offers stunning panoramic views. In case you are taking a road trip through the French Riviera, we highly recommend that you add to your itinerary even as a day trip from Nice, Cannes, or Menton. If you are staying in one of these places, we suggest taking a boat tour for a unique travel experience, enjoying the turquoise waters and beautiful surroundings. 

2-Nice 

Nice is a bigger city with magical sunsets, turquoise waters, a picturesque old town, and amazing Mediterranean vibes. It’s not like Monaco or Menton. It has a unique beauty and lots of things to do. You will find it in less than 30 minutes from Menton. Due to its size, it is the perfect place to base yourself and take day trips to the other gems of the French Riviera.  However, if you are short on time and still want to experience the beauty of this incredible French region, we suggest booking a guided tour to save time and money.

The French Riviera is a unique region, full of hidden gems. Menton, Antibes, and other lesser-known places are worth a visit! However, Menton in particular has it all, from dreamy beaches to charming squares. For us, it is an idyllic place to visit in summer or shoulder season (fall or spring). We firmly believe that Menton should be on everyone’s bucket list.
