Things to know before visiting Monaco
Although Monaco is the second smallest country in the world, it has many things to do and beautiful spots to visit. Almost everywhere you will find amazing views combined with its futuristic architecture. Due to its luxurious lifestyle, it attracts thousands of people who love high-end brands, luxury cars, yachts, resorts and gambling with the famous Monte Carlo Casino. However, you can always avoid all of the above and focus on exploring Monaco ! Many visit during the Grand Prix (late May – early June). But, you should be aware that everything gets hectic and more pricey at that time.
For solo travelers, Monaco is one of the safest places, as there are surveillance cameras everywhere. Obviously you can’t visit Monaco (even as a day trip) without paying a lot. But, like anywhere else, you can choose the local markets to eat fresh food and stay in more affordable hotels or even hostels to save money. As an independent country, it is separated from France and is not part of the European Union. So, roaming fees apply for visitors ! That’s why we strongly recommend purchasing a digital e-SIM card to avoid wasting a lot of money. Plus, Monaco is one of the most expensive countries, the same goes for mobile data plans.
How to get to Monaco ?
Getting to Monaco is quite easy. Although there is no airport, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is only 22 kilometers away. Once you arrive in Nice, you can take a taxi, car, train, bus or even a helicopter to get to Monaco. It totally depends on your needs and budgets on how to get there or tour the French Riviera. If you can’t find convenient flights to Nice, we suggest you fly to Marseille and then head to Nice or directly to Monaco. The fastest train from Marseille to Monaco takes around 3 hours.
Since Monaco is the definition of luxury, you can choose a private transfer not only to Monaco, but also to the French Riviera. The best time to visit Monaco
As you can guess, a country like Monaco is overcrowded and overpriced in the summer months. That’s why we recommend visiting during the shoulder season to avoid high prices and tourist crowds ! You could visit it in May, but it is the Grand Prix month and undoubtedly not the ideal time for a relaxing vacation. We would visit either in April or in September, when the weather is still good without huge crowds. However, we visited in August and even it was quite a challenge to get around and fully enjoy it, there were a few spots that were calming, especially early in the morning.
Best things to do in Monaco in summer
1-Visit the port Hercules
Located below the Monte Carlo district, the port Hercules is one of the best places to visit in Monaco. It is the main port of the country with countless yachts and boats. Strolling around and watching the super yachts is a must in Monaco, both in the morning and in the evening. There are also many nearby cafés, restaurants and music bars offering wonderful views of the port. Just 3 kilometers from the Port Hercules, you will find the oceanographic museum of Monaco which is one of the main tourist attractions. It was created in 1910 by Prince Albert and is managed by Commander Cousteau. It is an interesting place to visit, especially for families or people who love underwater life.
2-Explore the Old Town
If you are looking for a picturesque place in Monaco, the Old Town is the place to be. It is located on a hill and offers a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. You will find a charming square full of shops, cafés and restaurants, colorful buildings, the Prince’s Palace and Cathedral. It is easily accessible even on foot from the Port Hercules. Just make sure to get comfortable shoes, as there are many stairs to climb. Getting lost in its narrow streets and admiring the views is a real treat ! But, be aware that it is one of the busiest places in the summer with many tourists around.
3-Visit the Prince’s Palace of Monaco
Located in the Old Town, the Prince’s Palace dates back to the 13th century and is considered the main tourist attraction of the state ! A highlight of this trip to Monaco is witnessing the ceremony of changing the guard at the Prince’s Palace. A part of the Palace is accessible to visitors, but only from April to October. You will have the opportunity to visit the State Apartments, the main courtyard and the Hercules Gallery.
4-Go to the Saint Nicholas Cathedral
Monaco Cathedral is another gem of the Old Town district. Apart from its religious significance, it is very photogenic with a brilliant architecture and a beautiful outdoor area decorated with palm trees. The cathedral is dedicated to “Our Lade of the Immaculate Conception” and was built in 1875. If you have enough time, we suggest you visit the interior which has free entry. But, you should avoid visiting during the day, as it will likely be crowded, especially in July and August.
5-Enjoy the wonderful view from the Port de Fontvieille
If you are looking for the best viewpoint in Monaco, the Port de Fontveille offers breathtaking panoramic views. It is also a less crowded spot compared to the previous locations. It is an amazing place either for walks with a view or for beautiful photos. You can find this viewpoint easily, just a few steps before you reach the Cathedral. Port de Fontvieille is considered the new area of Monaco with its marina, shopping center and restaurants. So, if you are looking for another incredible place to spend your time, you can add it to your itinerary and the views will leave you in awe !
6-Visit the famous Monte Carlo Casino
In the heart of Monte Carlo, known as the “Golden Square” of Monaco, you will find the world famous casino. Tourists and gamblers from all over the world visit it every year. The casino was built in 1863 and has impressive architecture. If you are not a fan of casinos, you can simply visit the outdoor area for a fancy experience. Keep in mind that it is usually packed with tourists waiting to take pictures of the super luxury cars that drive past the casino. That’s why it is the best place to base yourself and take day trips to other parts of the French Riviera.
2-Villefranche-sur-Mer
Just a few kilometers from Nice, you will another gem of the South of France. Villefranche-sur-Mer is a small town full of vibrant colors. It has a beautiful old town and a picturesque port. It is known for its seafood, so if you are a foodie, you should add it to your itinerary. The beauty, ambiance and views of this little place will leave you with the best impressions.
3-Menton
You cannot fully experience the beauty of the French Riviera without visiting Menton. It is the last town before the Italian border. Thus, it perfectly combines French and Italian style, cuisine and architecture. It is also called the City of Lemons, because it has lemons and palm trees almost everywhere. Menton’s main beach (Plage des Sablettes) is one of the most dreamy and photogenic beaches in France. Imagine taking a morning dip with colorful houses as your background !
4-Cannes
Cannes is one of the fanciest cities on the Côte d’Azur. It owes its fame mainly to the Cannes Film Festival.
